Seven people, including four children, were rushed to hospital on Sunday afternoon following a head-on collision between two cars on the Marsa-Ħamrun bypass.

The crash happened at around 4pm, police said, when a BMW X6 driven by a 42-year-old man from Marsascala and a Renault Espace driven by a 38-year-old woman from Żabbar collided.

A 40-year-old woman and seven-year-old boy were also inside the BMW at the time, while the Renault was carrying three 14-year-old girls.

Civil Protection Department expertise was needed to extract the Renault driver from her vehicle.

All seven were rushed to Mater Dei Hospital, with several ambulances dispatched to the scene.

Later on Sunday evening, the police said that two of the 14-year-old girls and the 38-year-old Renault driver had been seriously hurt in the crash.

The other teenager inside the Renault was slightly injured, with the BMW driver, his adult passenger and the seven-year-old aboard also escaping with slight injuries.

Magistrate Marse-Ann Farrugia is leading an inquiry into the incident.
