The President of Malta’s National Commission to Unesco, Raymond Bondin, was asked to preside over the annual meeting of the world’s most important archaeologists’ meeting which met in Montalbano Elicona, Sicily, location of a very important archaeological site.

The 150 experts, including Italian experts, part of the International Committee of Archaeological Heritage Management, which forms part of the Unesco consultants’ International Council of Monuments and Sites, discussed in various workshops a holistic approach to heritage management. The participants came from 35 countries. In the inauguration the region of Sicily was represented by Prof. Sebastiano Tusa, the Regional Minister for Heritage. Prof. Tusa described Dr Bondin as a very great friend of Sicily who has left a very strong mark on the protection of heritage over many years of activity there. The conference included a field trip to the Argimusco site, which will be nominated for World Heritage.

Dr Bondin spoke about the efforts being made by Malta to protect its heritage. A lot has been done but a lot more needed to be done. Malta’s National Commission to Unesco has in the past year been very active at various levels. He expressed the wish for further collaboration between Malta and Sicily.
