Households are now entitled to collect a set of four stackable waste bins, which are being made available as part of a reformed waste recycling system.

The four bins have different coloured lids: black for mixed waste, white for sanitary waste, brown for glass, and green for mixed recyclables. Households should use bin liner of the corresponding colour for waste of each bin.

Although mixed and sanitary waste are both to be disposed of in black bags, the sanitary waste bin is being provided with a specific filter designed to eliminate unpleasant smells. Glass waste is usually taken out for collection in cardboard boxes and does not require any bin liner.

Distribution of the four free bins, which follows that of a smaller bin dedicated to organic waste, began in Gozo and has now reached Malta. Green Skips Services Ltd is running the distribution service, Wasteserv said in a statement.

Bins can be collection from a distribution point set up at Ta’ Qali, but on Friday Times of Malta reported that the collection service was being plagued by long queues. Wasteserv has pledged that it will start operating a number of other distribution points in the coming days.

People collecting their set of bins must present their ID card or a recent utility bill, which is then electronically registered.

Wasteserv reminded people to only taken garbage bags, not the bins, onto the kerb to be collected. It is important to remember to take out the right bag on time and on the correct day, the company said.

Further information and updates are available on Wasteserv’s Facebook page.
