Mario Muscat is the new coach of Premier League strugglers Qormi.

The former Malta goalkeeper has reached an agreement to leave Hibernians and join the newly-promoted side on a three-year contract.

Muscat fills in the void left by Brian Spiteri who stepped down from his post after the team's 2-0 defeat to Ħamrun Spartans earlier this month.

"After three fantastic seasons with my home town its time to move on and take another step in my coaching experience. Winning the league and passing through to the 2nd round of the Champions League was surely the peak of my coaching career," Muscat wrote on his facebook page.

"Three seasons where basically I was involved in every role in the technical staff from GOALKEEPER COACH to HEAD COACH.

"I would like to thank all the players for their respect and commitment, all coaches that I have worked with, president, Jesmond Abela and comittee members that gave me all opportunities possible and last but not least all SUPPORTERS that were behind us in glory but mostly in difficult times.

"Good luck and I'm sure that in the future will have the opportunity to work together again....."

Muscat was due to start his work at Qormi as from Friday evening when he leads the team in a friendly with Premier League leaders Gżira United.

It is understood that Muscat will run the rule over three new overseas players from France, Brazil and Nigerian who play in offensive position as he looks to bolster his squad.
