The parapet wall of a stone bridge in Burmarrad collapsed when it was hit by a vehicle  a few weeks ago, leading the road to be closed to traffic.

Readers sent in the dramatic pictures of the fallen stones earlier this week.

The old stone bridge was hit by a vehicle and, while the bridge’s stability was not compromised, access to cars was closed to facilitate ongoing road rebuilding works, Infrastructure Malta said.

A spokesman for the authority said Infrastructure Malta was in talks with the relevant heritage and environmental authorities to determine the best repair and restoration method for the structure so as to retain its historic and architectural value.

The authority had already inspected the bridge before the incident, the spokesman said. It determined it was structurally sound but concerns were raised about its adequacy for traffic, especially considering its narrow width and the amount of heavy vehicles that used it to access the nearby industrial zones.

The agency was currently rebuilding Triq Burmarrad, a two-kilometre country road extending from Burmarrad to the t’Alla u Ommu area of Naxxar.

Infrastructure Malta removed the road surface and constructed new foundations soon after separate works which saw new water mains being laid were completed earlier in November, the spokesman said.
