A young lady accused of making off with a church-goer’s handbag inside Cospicua’s Immaculate Conception Church on Monday evening has been remanded in custody.

Latoia Chircop, 23 years old and homeless, was arrested and arraigned over the theft which was aggravated on account of the fact that it had allegedly taken place inside a church.

The woman, who was also charged as a recidivist, pleaded not guilty.

The court, presided over by Magistrate Astrid May Grima, heard how the theft allegedly took place yesterday evening towards 6.20pm when the church-goer was robbed of her handbag.

The suspect was later tracked down and arrested.

A request for bail was turned down by the court, even in view of the fact that the woman did not have a fixed address.

Inspector Oriana Spiteri prosecuted.
Lawyer Joseph Brincat was defence counsel.
