While it is heartening to see so many tourists flooding Valletta, a better system for those disembarking from cruise ships is needed, especially when groups of people are boarding the Hop-On-Hop-Off buses. Chaos is the order of the day there and, apart from the traffic jams caused, someone could easily get hit by a car. Some sense must prevail before tragedy strikes.
In shambles
Buġibba is, and has been for quite some time now, in shambles. Signs and rubbish bins in the locality are in urgent need of replacement. This is more so at the promenade, where also the pavements cry out for some attention. Close to the water park, pavement tiles have started coming off.
Attention please
A metre-wide pothole in Triq Ghawdex, Qawra, by the side of the Dolmen Hotel, is a constant danger to motorists and, especially, to bus drivers to and from the nearby bus terminus. Driving down this road, one has to swerve sharply to the right, facing oncoming traffic, to avoid the pothole. The road is actually full of potholes and should be seen to right away.
Quality control
The end part of Mdina Road, Birkirkara, is in urgent need of some resurfacing. The road, now increasingly being used by those leaving the Mrieħel central business district, is full of potholes, with motorists having to manoeuvre their vehicles round to avoid them. The quality of the road should have been given top priority when drawing up the traffic plan for the so-called business district. But it is still not too late.
Blocked arteries
Delivery truck drivers must respect the law. This newspaper is often inundated with complaints about such vehicles often being parked haphazardly outside shops, causing bottlenecks, traffic jams and road rage. Wardens need to be deployed to areas known to encounter such problems continuously. St Joseph High Road, Ħamrun, is a case in point. At one time, the mounted police used to patrol the area there.
