Birdlife Malta in Sicily with Legambiente
The start of a series of exchange visits to include cultural, historical and nature activities
Birdlife Malta’s events and activities group has teamed up with Legambiente in the Canicattini Bagni region of Sicily to organise exchange visits which include cultural, historical and nature activities.
Group members and friends recently visited the Canicattini Bagni region on a day tour. Canicattini Bagni is a municipality in the province of Syracuse located about 190km southeast of Palermo and about 20km southwest of Syracuse. Bosco di Mandredonna was the group’s first stop where participants enjoyed a nature walk in the forest renowned for its diversity in flora.
Various species were seen and sampled along the walk. The day also included a mushroom-picking activity. Legambiente expert Prof. Paolino Uccello accompanied the group and pointed out the different types of mushrooms growing wild and ready for picking.
After a traditional lunch at a leading agritourism farm, the group visited a popular landmark, the Stone Bridge of San Alfano built in 1796, followed by a visit to the historical centre of Canicattini Bagni, a relatively small town of just over 7,000 inhabitants. The town is known as the City of Liberty and Music and is renowned for its history, culture and traditions.
A visit to the Museo del Tessuto, dell’Emigrante e della Medicina Popolare followed.
The museum displays many reproductions of the old houses and workshops of the village where it is possible to discover and understand the customs and traditions of the area. Birdlife looks forward to organising more trips to this region, together with its partners Legambiente.
