Two love stories will be combined as one in the play Orfeo & Manjun, which brings two myths together on stage.

The play, which will take place October 19 (Friday) and 20 (Saturday) at the Mediterrranean Conference Centre, will amalgamate the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice and the Persian story of Layla and Majnun.

The performance deals with themes of love, loss and longing as well as the past and the future. The play will be performed using puppets which will be used to create shadows on the stage.

The narrative weaves together the Maltese, English and Arabic languages, while the music of Dick van der Harst, Moneim Adwan and Howard Moody, combines both Oriental and Western styles.

The puppets will also roam the streets of Valletta at Sfilata fil-Kapitali on October 27.

During this colourful activity, the participants who built the mythic animals will be animating and propelling them around Valletta, accompanied by several band clubs, musicians, dancers, and many others.

The play was formed after workshops in which several communities, including school children, the elderly, band club associations and youth organisations took part.

Tickets, at €5, are available from tickets.valletta2018.org .

Orfeo & Majnun is a collaboration with various entities in Europe and is part of the programme of Valletta 2018.

The project has already been completed successfully in Belgium and France last June. Vienna in Austria and Krakow in Poland are next will be producing this project in 2019.
