The Week of the Italian Language in the World, organised yearly by the cultural and diplomatic network of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation to promote the Italian as a great language of classic and modern culture, kicks off today.

It focuses on a theme that acts as a leitmotif for conferences, exhibitions, performances and film screenings.

This 18th edition is dedicated to Italian and the web, social networks for the Italian language. It is a highly topical subject, and will delve into the interactions and influences between the Italian language, the net, new information technologies and social communications, including social platforms.

The cultural programme offered by the Italian Cultural Institute in Valletta, conceived together with the Italian Embassy, organised in collaboration with the University of Malta and the University of Macerata, the Pirandello Stable Festival, the Centre for Theatre Production/Assemblea Teatro, Eden Cinemas, includes conferences on the Italian language in the internet era, performances, literature, theatre and music as a tribute to Leonardo Sciascia and Luigi Tenco and the screening of the film Sconnessi, a comedy released a few months ago.

A conference in Italian on how, among others, the introduction of the internet, new technologies and social media changed communication, thereby leading to shifts not only at a cultural level but also on a linguistic level takes place at the auditorium of the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (classroom 9, level -1) at the University tonight at 6pm.

A cultural and artistic performance with acting, video and songs highlighting the links between Leonardo Sciascia and Malta takes place at the Italian Cultural Institute tomorrow at 6.30pm. Entrance is free. On Thursday, there will be a recital performance on Luigi Tenco, also at the Italian Cultural Institute at 6.30pm. Entrance is also free.

Meanwhile the Eden Cinemas in St Julian’s will host the screening of the film Sconnessi on Sunday at 8.30pm. The film, in Italian, will have English subtitles.
