A man on a rented jet ski drove straight into a boat, injuring two men in the process, police said.

The incident took place Sunday at Santa Marija bay in Comino, when Ryan Micallef was out on the boat with his family.

Mr Micallef, 35, and a 64-year-old from Attard, were both hurt and taken to Gozo General Hospital.

“We were driving out of Santa Marija bay when I saw the jet ski heading towards the boat with excessive speed,” Mr Micallef said.

The man driving the boat “had stopped and turned sideways to stop from falling.”

“When he pressed on the gas he kept driving straight into us,” he said.

Now nursing a broken foot, Mr Micallef is calling upon authorities to change laws permitting people without a driving licence to rent jet skis.

“They need to be revised as soon as possible,” he said.

“The tourist who drove into us admitted that he didn’t know how to drive the jet ski and that he had just rented it for a day,” Mr Micallef said.
