A shoplifter who stole clothes, perfume and shoes from The Point shopping mall has been handed a suspended sentence after admitting to her wrongdoing.

Magistrate Caroline Farrugia Frendo heard how Simona-Corina Stefanidis, 42, a Romanian national, had stolen perfumery, branded clothing and a pair of shoes from six outlets at the shopping mall. The selling price totalled some €1,900.

The police found the missing items in the woman's possession.

The court condemned the woman to a 14-month jail term suspended for two years, while warning her of the consequences should she commit another offence during that operative period.

“It was surely the first and last time,” the woman said, visibly shaken as the hearing came to an end.

Inspector Jonathan Ransley prosecuted.
