A new section of the superior court of appeal has been set up to enable the courts to deal with more cases.

The Justice Ministry explained that the new section - the third - was needed because of the higher number of cases being decided in the civil court of first instance.

The existing two sections of the superior court of appeal are composed of two judges each plus the chief justice.

The new section will be composed of two judges presided by a senior judge. The assignment of duties to the judges will remain the prerogative of the chief justice.

Justice Minister Owen Bonnici said the decision to set up the new section was taken to better safeguard the rule of law and to grant justice within a reasonable time.
