I refer to your leader (September 24).  I write to you in my name and not in the name of the Accountancy Board, as a member of the board nominated by the Malta Institute of Accountants and accepted by the Minister of Finance, and who through personal sacrifice has no other objective but to uphold the reputation and smooth running of our leading profession. I do this with no fear or favour as my colleagues on the board can confirm.

It so happens that the country and the profession are unfortunately going through a dilemma with the Panama Papers case and nobody, no authority, not even the courts of law and the powers that be in the EU have reached any conclusion or pronounced themselves on anything yet.

Why is the editor of the Times of Malta now expecting the board to be the first to throw the stone when everybody else is still contemplating the right action? I understand that it is taking long, however control over this is beyond the Accountancy Board.

It is wrong of any member of the board to speak personally to the press as you seem to allege and if a member felt so compelled to do that,  theTimes of Malta must have gone beyond a simple enquiry about the veracity of the statement that the member chose to make and also consulted the board in camera to address this very difficult situation to all and sundry.

I don’t remember ever having such a request from your papers discussed at the board. Neither do I remember our board being advised by the government to put any investigation on hold.

I for one, like others, am doing my utmost and making my views amply clear within the board, to assist the board to do the right thing. In the face of this situation I could have moved away from it and relieved myself of the task.  However, I prefer to stay on board, carry out the duty entrusted to me by the Institute and the minister to the end and continue assisting this competent authority in the name of our leading profession, with finding the best way of dealing with this matter. Preferably without being dubbed as inactive or averse to any criticism which is certainly not the case.
