The Lifeguard post at Fond Għadir in Sliema was carried out to sea on Tuesday as heavy waves pounded the North-East coast of Malta.

The Malta Red Cross, which operates the lifeguard service, said that with gale force winds reaching force 6, double red flags have been hoisted on several beaches.

The lifeguard service at Fond Għadir has been suspended for health and safety reasons.

People were urged to avoid the beaches in Sliema, Mellieħa, Qawra, Marsascala, and Buġibba.

The The Emergency Response & Rescue Corps (ERRC) issued a similar warning.

The strong wind is expected to persist on Wednesday.
