The Nationalist members of the Mosta local council, where they hold a one-seat majority, decided to bestow Ġieħ il-Mosta to the late Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was killed by a car bomb last October 16.

The Labour councillors voted against the motion, which was approved with the casting vote of the PN mayor, and with good reason. Because Caruana Galizia had absolutely no connection whatsoever with Mosta. Besides the fact that she was the most divisive blogger imaginable since she spent most of her adult life harshly criticising, offending and mocking mostly Labour politicians, officials and activists and, at times, their close relatives and friends.

Of course, the most disgusting comment she ever made was about former Labour leader and prime minister, Dom Mintoff, died. “May he rot in hell,” she posted on her blog and then expressing her wish that Mintoff “deserved to die in the same way [Muammar] Gaddafi had been killed”. She then left “to celebrate” Mintoff’s death.

This is the person who thePN councillors of Mosta decided to honour. And who, ironically, had also called the PN councillors’ own leader, Adrian Delia,“a crook”.

May I take this opportunity to congratulate Anthony Agius Decelis and his wife, Josette, a former Mosta Labour mayor and councillor and the Labour councillors, for deciding not to attend the event as a sign of protest for granting Ġieħ il-Mosta to a person who despised Labour people, especially Labour politicians and their families. I happen to be one of them.
