A four-time congressman in Arizona faces the ignominy of watching six of his brothers and sisters publicly endorse his rival.

Republican Paul Gosar’s views on immigration, the environment and public healthcare have horrified his immediate family to such an extent that they have all agreed to video testimonials in which they endorse his Democrat rival for congress.

In the videos unveiled by Democrat candidate David Brill, six of Mr Gosar’s nine siblings say that they want their brother out of office.

"None of us are doing this for publicity. None of us even want to do it," David Gosar says in one of the videos. “We have to stand up for our good name. This is not who we are”.

"It would be difficult to see my brother as anything but a racist," his sister Grace says in another.

This is not the first time the Gosar family has aired its dirty linen in public. In a 2016 interview with the New York Times, David Gosar described his congressman brother as an “embarassment” to the family.

Although the embarassment of his siblings’ public disavowal is bound to sting, the videos are unlikely to dent Mr Gosar’s chances of reelection - in 2016, the congressman won 71 per cent of the vote in his district.
