Great strides forward
The Prime Minister, George Borg Olivier, in an address to the nation, televised and broadcast yesterday evening said that his message to the people on the occasion of the fourth anniversary of Malta’s Independence was: “Let us use our political freedoms to make further progress on the road to economic independence and thus we will provide a stronger and more permanent basis to our progress in economic security and prosperity.”
The Prime Minister said: “Four years ago, Malta proudly and confidently assumed her rightful place as a sovereign independent State and celebrated the greatest constitutional event in its history.
“Today, we are beginning to commemorate that glorious day and it is indeed gratifying that we should be celebrating this fourth anniversary filled with great courage in facing the future.
“These four years, being only a very short period, have flashed by. Within these few years, however, we have not only succeeded in consolidating Malta’s constitutional liberties and her position among nations but we have, despite many difficulties, also made great strides on the road to economic independence, thereby strengthening and adding even greater significance to political independence.”
