Norman departed this life at the venerable age of 91. It seems like yesterday but my first recollection of Norman was in his last year at Medical School on University Sports Day when he could be seen taking part in several events and going home  proudly holding an armful of trophies and medals. As a first-year student I could not fail but be impressed.

Norman specialised as an ENT surgeon and made his career in the RAF Medical Branch.

His postings took him all over the United Kingdom as well as overseas, including Germany. He treated a large number of grateful aircrew and helped them retain their flying category.

I was fortunate to serve with him at RAF Hospital Nocton Hall, Lincolnshire, and saw at first-hand what an excellent practitioner he was. At Nocton Hall he much enjoyed his time as president of the Officers’ Mess Committee and presided over a number of memorable ladies’ guest nights.

I will remember Norman as a gentleman with a strong sense of duty but always ready to see the funny side of every situation with his cheerful character. He was popular with the staff and always approachable. He was a mentor to many who served with him.

Norman was also a devoted family man.

He confessed he was strict but always fair. As he grew older and retired to Malta his favourite topic was the family and he waited anxiously for his children to visit him from abroad. They made him very proud. He adored his dear devoted wife Rose.

He always loved sport. During his well-earned retirement, until age intervened, he was to be found regularly at the Marsa Sports Club with his golfing friends enjoying his favourite game.

I offer my condolences to dear Rose, Andrew, Mandy, Mark, Simon and families. We will certainly remember him in our prayers.
