A power outage in Qormi and Santa Venera on Sunday, which also caused power to flicker in surrounding localities, was caused by a faulty cable.

Replying to questions sent on Monday morning, Enemalta said that a fault on the electricity distribution system on Sunday at 10.25pm affected customers in parts of Qormi and Santa Venera.

"The faulty cable was identified and isolated by Enemalta personnel. Supply to 46 per cent of those affected was restored within 10 minutes, while the remaining 54 per cent got their services restored in between one and two hours."

Other customers in nearby localities may have experienced very short unavoidable fluctuations at the time of occurrence of the fault, and during the supply restoration process, a spokeswoman said.

Enemalta has completed repairs on the distribution infrastructure, and the system is now operating normally, the spokeswoman said.

"No additional power outages or disturbances are foreseen in the affected areas as a result of this fault."

In August parts of central Malta were plunged into darkness and sweltering summer heat at night, as a power cut ripped through various localities.

Enemalta later said the power cut was caused by a lightning strike.
