Post-match analysis after a football game is all part and parcel of the sport, but some commentators might be expected to take a somewhat neutral stand.

Not so for SportMalta chairman Luciano Busuttil, who waded right in and said unequivocally that he would rather watch “children play football” after the Malta national team held Azerbaijan to a 1-1 draw at the National Stadium on Monday.

Malta held on for a point against the Azeris, who were more enterprising and looked more likely to score the winner. The draw gave Malta its first points in the UEFA Nations League, after a disappointing 1-3 defeat against the tiny Faroe Islands in an opener last week.

Dr Busuttil took to his personal Facebook shortly after the final whistle to chastise the national team for what he felt was a poor performance.

“And this was supposed to be our reaction to the 3-1 defeat with Faroe Islands? Are we kidding? Am I the only one who is not happy with our National Football team today?” he wrote.

He was especially incensed by upbeat TV commentators, saying "the worst part is to listen to TVM 2 commentary saying it was a positive game".

Dr Busuttil gave no indication in his post of what he - as the SportMalta chairman - intended to do to boost the performance.
