Jeremy Scerri, a lecturer at the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (Mcast) who is undertaking PhD studies at the University of Malta, received the Gold Leaf Award for a paper he recently presented at the 14th edition of the PhD Research in Microelectronics and Electronics (Prime 2018) conference  held in Prague, Czech Republic.

The paper he presented was entitled ‘Exploiting nonlinearities to improve the linear region in an electrostatic MEMS demodulator’. His research studied digital communications with a special focus on a module present in all electronic communication devices, such as modems, mobile phones, GSM modules, bluetooth devices and wifi routers. The paper discussed an alternative approach to that currently found in these devices and looked at how to optimise the performance of this alternative solution.

The award is given to the top 10 per cent of papers presented, based on a reviewer’s and the awards committee’s evaluation. The top ranked papers will be invited to submit extended versions for a special edition of the very large-scale integration (VLSI) journal Integration.
