The Environment and Resources Authority would be asked in the coming weeks to prepare a policy on making cities greener, Environment Minister Jose Herrera said.

The policy is an electoral promise, Dr Herrera said, adding that it would focus on making both buildings and open spaces greener.

The initiative was announced during the launch of the Valletta Green Festival, which saw St George’s Square turned into a magnificent garden with no fewer than 110,000 flowers.

Speaking at the launch, V18 chairman Jason Micallef said this was the biggest edition of the Green festival yet. The V18 foundation created two gardens: one rooftop prototype garden on the main guard of the Attorney General’s office and one in St George’s Square.

The rooftop garden on the main guard will be open for two weeks while the flowers in the square will remain there until May 6.

The square also includes tents which will host workshops by environmental organisations, including BirdLife and the Gaia Foundation.
