The Nationalist Party insisted on Tuesday that abortion should not be introduced in Malta.

The PN was reacting to a call by Nils Muižnieks, the Council of Europe's rights commissioner, for Malta to revise its laws banning abortion.

The call was made in an opinion piece in Times of Malta.

Shadow Minister Claudio Grech said babies in the womb should not be seen as being objects which could be disposed of. They had rights, not least the right to life.

Mr Grech took exception to 'pressure' being put on a sovereign country, more so when the government had no mandate to introduce abortion, and the huge majority of the Maltese were against it.

With this matter having broad consensus in the country, the government should focus on continuing to ensure that society safeguarded life, Mr Grech said.
