Michela Spiteri’s article (February 18) on (the lack of) waste bins in Sliema, is so true and this is probably a major cause of the filth in and around our home town. But not entirely. The flower pots in Dingli Street are used as bins and ash trays, notwithstanding the few bins here and there. Occasionally they are watered – with the rubbish in them – making them rubbish ponds.

Residents dispose of their dog bags all over the place instead of taking them home with them.

Let us hope that if and when these bins are produced, they will not be used for this purpose.

Also, the lower parts of all the pavements are always filthy; cars parked there make it difficult for the street sweepers (when they turn up) to clean these areas.

Finally, it is up to us residents to cooperate with the local council to keep Sliema clean.
