Sliema Wanderers and Tarxien Rainbows took a point each after a 1-1 draw at the National Stadium.

Sliema drew first blood after 26 minutes when Frank Temile’s speed caught the Tarxien defence napping and the Nigerian laid the ball to Nikolae Milinceanu who rounded Andrea Cassar to slot the ball home.

But the Rainbows took just three minutes to draw level.

Gabriel Aquilina punished his former team-mates after his first shot was blocked by goalkeeper Antonio Cotticelli he was first on the rebound to bury the ball home.

Things could have got even better for Tarxien as on 31 minutes they were awarded a penalty when Faria’s cross appeared to be handled by John Mintoff inside the area.

But from the spot, Faria’s effort was pushed away by Cotticelli.

Tarxien began the second half on the offensive.

Samba Tounkara floated the ball inside the area. Faria’s dummy released Aquilina who nipped in from the blind side to shoot over the bar.

At the other end, Cassar needed the help of the goal frame to keep out Ricardo Correa’s inswinger before Matthias Muchardi saw his effort cleared off the line.

The woodwork denied Sliema a second time minutes later when Kurt Shaw saw his header coming off the post.

Matar Dieye almost won it for Tarxien at the death but his headed effort was somehow kept out by Cotticelli.
