Heritage Malta is organising an open day at Tarxien Temples tomorrow, enabling visitors to visit this Unesco World Heritage Site for free from 9am to 5pm.

The site is one of the largest and most complex of the Maltese islands’ prehistoric sites. Although three temples are clearly recognisable, the complex actually consists of four megalithic structures built in the Neolithic (ca 3,600-2,500 BC) and re-used in the Bronze Age (ca 2,400-1,500BC).

The South Temple holds the largest number of stone reliefs representing animals and various spiral motifs. The Central Temple is unique as it has a complex architecture based on six apses (semi-circular chambers).

Walkways within and outside the temple provide easy accessibility and also enable visitors to view the prehistoric remains from a unique viewpoint. The site is also covered by a protective tent.

Heritage Malta’s open day at Tarxien Temples will be held tomorrow from 9am to 5pm, with last admission at 4.30pm. There will be two guided tours starting at 10am and 2pm respectively. For more information visit www.heritagemalta.org or the agency’s Facebook page.
