The top two teams in the women’s Super League, Paola Volley and Fleur de Lys Royal Panda, clashed against each other in what turned out to be a thrilling encounter.

Lorenzo Robba’s Paola girls started strongly and surged clear midway through the first set, only to be pegged back by FDL who went on to take the opening set 25-22.

The Paolites improved in the second set to level the match.

The third set proved to be a decisive one. Fleur de Lys Royal Panda had the chance to close it when they were leading 24-21.

But Paola fought back and went ahead 25-24.

However, it was the Blues who had the final say as they scored two consecutive points to wrap up the third set 31-29.

The game continued to offer some spectacular play from both teams but it was Fleur De Lys, coached by Silvan Gauci, who managed to close the set 25-17 and seal a 3-1 win.

In the other top-tier match, Sliema Wanderers, despite playing without some regular players, managed to overcome Kavallieri 3-0.

The result enabled Fleur de Lys Panda to open a five-point lead at the top over Paola Volley with Sliema moving up to third place ahead of Balzan.

In the women’s First Division, Swieqi Phoenix, Fleur de Lys Swatch and Mġarr continued to strengthen their place at the top of the standings.

Leaders Swieqi found very little opposition from bottom-placed Mellieħa to chalk up three precious points.

Fleur de Lys Swatch had to dig hard to overcome Balzan Flyers while Mġarr obtained their sixth win after seeing off Żabbar St Patrick’s 3-0.

Valletta Mapei continued their unbeaten run in the Men's Super League with a 3-1 victory (25-23, 25-17, 17-25, 25-22) over their closest rivals Aloysians Ice.

The Lilywhites were in control except for a short stint in the third set which went Aloysians’ way.

The reigning champions thus extended their lead to eight points at the top of the table and are inching closer to a successful title defence.
