The St Julian's council will be writing to the authorities to formally object to a new platform set up outside a bar in St George's Road.

Mayor Guido Dalli told Times of Malta when contacted that the council had not been informed about the platform and that the bar owner had obtained all the necessary permits from the Planning Authority and the Land Authority.

He said the council will be formally objecting to the structure, as it had done with similar developments on the past.

“They've got everything in order. The problem is that we were not told about it. We are never consulted beforehand so now we need to write to the PA to formally object. The Sliema council had similar problems and nothing was ever done, despite their objections,” Mr Dalli said.

Former St Julian's mayor and now Nationalist MP Karl Gouder described the new structure as "madness". The platform is located on a busy road close to the bend leading to the Regional Road.

The new platform, meant to be accommodate tables and chairs outside the bar, was placed on a loading bay.

Replies from the Planning Authority have not been received yet.

Several platforms giving concessions to bars and restaurants, have been erected in other areas, especially along The Strand in Sliema, despite the potential traffic hazards as well as a reduction in parking spaces.
