Air Malta will be operating four new routes, including a direct €39 one-way flight from Malta to London Southend, the airline announced on Monday.

The national airline will operate a flight from Malta to Cagliari in Sardinia, Malta to London Southend, and flights between Southend, Catania and Cagliari, Air Malta chairman Charles Mangion told a news conference.

The routes will be available in a few weeks’ time and will be available at a competitive prices, he added.

London Southend is a relatively new airport built for the London Olympics in 2012. Air Malta will retain its slots at Gatwick and Heathrow.

Air Malta will also be leasing its 10th aircraft later this year to cater for increased demand from the new routes.

Dr Mangion admitted the airline was going through a difficult time but he noted that the strategy was paying off.

Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi said Air Malta was inching towards break-even by the end of March, having registered a 30 per cent increase in revenue in February.
