Twenty-four students from Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary, Naxxar, recently travelled to Strasbourg, France, to take part in the latest edition of the Euroscola programme alongside 485 other students from 20 EU Member States. The students were accompanied by teachers Amii Bartolo, Adrian Muscat and Piera Xuereb.

During the event the students aired their views in debates on various topics related to the EU, including the environment, migration, human rights, culture and youth employment as well as Europe’s future.

The discussions took place at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, where MEPs hold their monthly plenary sessions. Just like MEPs, during the event the students nominated and elected their representatives, chairpersons and rapporteurs of committees, and at the end of the debates they also voted for or against proposals.

The students and teachers were welcomed by Joseph Filletti, Malta’s permanent representative to the Council of Europe, who explained the distinction between the Council of Europe and the European Council, as well as the work of the council and its institutions. They also visited the Council of Europe, and held excursions to the city of Strasbourg and the town of Colmar.

The students who took part in the event were chosen after sitting for an exam organised by the European Parliament Representation in Malta.
