There were 365,483 licensed motor vehicles at the end of June, 1.1% more than in the previous quarter. This reflected an average increase of 43 per day.

During the previous quarter, an average of 29 new vehicles a day were added to local roads.

The National Statistics Office said that administrative data obtained from Transport Malta showed that 78.6% were passenger cars, 13.5% commercial vehicles and 6.7% were motorcycles/quadricycles and all terrain vehicles. Buses and minibuses accounted for less than 1%.

A total 6,448 new licences were issued in the period under review. The majority - 4,751 or 73.7% -were issued to passenger cars, followed by motorcycles (886).

Newly-licensed ‘new’ motor vehicles amounted to 3,132, or 48.6%, and newly licensed ‘used’ motor vehicles totalled 3,316. An average of 71 vehicles per day were newly licensed.

As at the end of June, 221,273 vehicles ( 60.5%), had petrol engines.
Vehicles with diesel engines amounted to 141,975 (38.8%).
