An elderly couple in Luqa got more than they bargained for last week when a man who claimed to be collecting money for charity tricked them into letting him into their home before robbing them of €240 in pension money.

The thief, who was caught on CCTV, saw the elderly man mopping the floor just inside the main door and asked for €20 for charity.

The elderly man got him the cash and the thief then asked to go to the toilet.

After exiting the bathroom, the thief locked the elderly man in the room he was in before running to where he had seen him get the €20 and grabbing a further €240.

The man’s wife unsuccessfully tried to stop the thief from running away by holding on to his arm, but  he got away.

The incident happened last Wednesday just before 10.30am. A police report was filed.
