Eight spectators were injured when a car being driven by a Maltese driver left the road and ploughed into spectators during a hillclimb race in Piedimonte, Sicily, this morning.

The accident happened at about 11.30am when the driver, Ryan Mangion, lost control of his car, a Ford Escort Mk1 in a curve with the vehicle hitting the crowd.  

Mr Mangion has been competing in hillclimbs for several years and is regarded as an experienced driver.  

Of the eight injured, a woman and a 15-year-old boy were seriously injured and taken to hospital by helicopter, according to the Italian media.

No Maltese were injured.

 

Observers said Mr Mangion was fortunate not be injured since he was driving a left-hand drive vehicle and the impact was on the right. The car was also equipped with a driver's safety cage.

Another two Maltese were also taking part in the event, which was suspended after the crash.

The Malta Motorsport Federation expressed its regret and said it is in contact with the Maltese delegation.
