After 12 years of anticipation, the already naturally bright fruit will take on a new touch of colour, according to Mental Floss.

It is reported that the altered fruit will have rosy flesh and a sweeter taste than its untouched counterpart. Lycopene, a pigment found in red fruit and vegetables, is responsible for the colour.

The concept of pink pineapples have been in the works since 2005, thought up by one of the world's largest produce suppliers, Del Monte Fresh Produce, according to NBC News. 

The genetically modified fruit was officially approved last December by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

"(Del Monte's) new pineapple has been genetically engineered to produce lower levels of the enzymes already in conventional pineapple that convert the pink pigment lycopene to the yellow pigment beta carotene,” the FDA said in a statement, quoted by NBC. “Lycopene is the pigment that makes tomatoes red and watermelons pink, so it is commonly and safely consumed." 

The FDA also believes that genetically engineered plants are generally safe to consume.

It has been reported that Del Monte is working with Dole to grow the anticipated pink pineapples in countries such as Hawaii and Costa Rica.
