I must agree with Chris Stergar (November 19) that various aspects of CHOGM's publicity must surely compromise the security of the event. One does not need to be a security expert to know that making use of 59 identical BMWs, displaying the model prominently in the press and putting licence plates on them that read CHOGM singles them out as clear potential targets. It is almost like taping large notices reading "hit me" on the backs of the foreign dignitaries.

Cars used should be different and unmarked - unless of course their purpose is more about status than transportation. Moreover, the venue of the event should have been kept secret. And the building of roads so selectively and at the last minute increases risk by revealing the likely routes.

Perhaps all this is a clever security strategy. Perhaps the BMWs are, in fact, to be used as decoys, and the foreign dignitaries will be ferried around in minivans on our older pot-hole filled roads. But I doubt it.
