Lohombus issues Lm1m in loans every month
The Lohombus Corporation in Blata l-Bajda loans out on average Lm1 million a month, mainly to home buyers. The corporation started off in 1969 with a modest Lm3 million loan portfolio. By 1992, the figure had risen to Lm24 million and by the end of last year it had quadrupled to Lm100 million.
Police allow burglary of elderly women to take place
A police informer was allowed to escape after robbing two elderly women at knife-point, the Criminal Court heard yesterday. Superintendent Joseph Psaila and Police Inspector Raymond Vella Gregory revealed how they were tipped off about the robbery by an informer on condition he was allowed to escape from the scene.
Quarry extension rejected
Two applications for quarry extensions at Tal-Magħluq, limits of Siġġiewi and Il-Qasam il-Kbir, limits of Qrendi, were turned down yesterday by the Planning Authority’s Development Control Commission.

Impasse in UK aid talks
Prime Minister Dr G. Borg Olivier said on his return from London late yesterday evening that what was blocking progress in the financial talks between Britain and Malta was “a poor offer made by the British government which I cannot imagine how they expected the Maltese government to accept”. Dr Borg Olivier said he was meeting his colleagues in the Cabinet as soon as possible and would make a statement in the House of representatives soon.
Blasts wreck house in Balzan
Feverish activity went on last night till the early hours of this morning after three explosions completely demolished a house and garage at 124-5, Main Street, Balzan, owned by Mr Lewis Grech Sant of Valletta. The old man residing in the ground floor tenement was believed to have been buried under the debris. The flat above was untenanted.
Public inquiry on air services
The public inquiry into the applications made by Malta Airways Co Ltd to operate scheduled air services to London, Glasgow, Manchester, Rome, Tripoli and Catania opened at the National Museum in Valletta yesterday.
