Watch: It's raining trash in St Paul's Bay

Resident stunned as garbage bags thrown from fourth-floor balcony

Carefully separate your waste, remember which days to take out your white bags and which days your black - or, it seems, if that fails, just throw the lot out of your window and get on with your day.

Video sent to Times of Malta by a St Paul’s Bay resident shows a woman casually lobbing garbage bag after garbage bag off a fourth-storey balcony onto the pavement and street below.

At first, the woman appears to be making some effort to land her rubbish on a pile of other bags outside the apartment block, but even this consideration soon seems to disappear, as the bags start raining down haphazardly into an on-street parking spot.

The resident who sent the footage said the local council had been informed and was looking into the matter.

Under a new recycling scheme introduced late last year, individuals who break garbage collection rules can be subjected to fines of between €150 and €500.

Households must separate their waste and place organic material in white bags while using the black bags for mixed waste. Items that are recyclable, such as paper, plastic and metals, will be collected separately.

Each locality then has its own schedule laying down which bags are to be taken out on which day.
