A worker fed up of risking his life every time he enters and exits his own office has voiced his frustration about inadequate construction safety on social media.

Simon Ciantar shared a video of a white SUV slowly navigating a tight hairpin turn at a property in San Ġwann, with a multi-storey drop just inches away.

In a second video he shared along with his Facebook post, Mr Ciantar can be seen rocking a metal barricade separating his property from the sheer drop with one hand. It shakes wildly as a result.

“This is the drive in to my office garage,” he wrote on Facebook. “The dividing wall to the next property was demolised by the developer and replaced by this flimsy barricade which is the only thing protecting all garage users from a 3 storey drop”.

Mr Ciantar said he had reported the developer to authorities as well as the project architect to the Kamra tal-Periti.

Kamra tal-Periti president Simone Vella Lenicker told Times of Malta that they had asked the architect for further details.

Temporary barrier replaced unsafe wall - architect

Architect Elena Borg Costanzi told Times of Malta that the metal barrier was a temporary one installed until a crane could be brought to the site. That had happened this week, she said.

What was not evident from the video, she added, was that the original wall dividing the properties had been built on soil and was structurally unsound.

“We removed that wall because it was in itself dangerous,” she said.

Attempts to contact Mr Ciantar for comment were unsuccessful.
