The ninth edition of the Malta Robotics Olympiad (MRO) was held last weekend, attracting thousands of tech enthusiasts.

The annual event sees some 16,000 visitors every year and is touted as the largest technology fair on the island.

This year’s edition was a collection of six major international events under one roof.

A main attraction was the legacy competition which had first planted the seed for the MRO back in 2010 – the MRO Robo Sumo – where robots created and programmed by students fight in a tournament until only one remains functioning.

One of the newest competitions was the Malta Robo League, aimed at a younger audience. The more than 350 students who took part built robots which were judged by a panel of experts.

The DiY Bots was the smallest event at the MRO and saw participants assemble robots on the spot to achieve simple tasks.

The eSports Festival is also a growing part of the symposium with over 30 international teams competing this year.

Two new initiatives – the Digital Careers Expo area and the Gadgets Expo – presented the largest digital industry recruitment agencies under one roof and showcased the hottest gadgets for the public to experience.
