The Keeper, a British-German biographical film directed by Marcus Rosenmüller and starring German actor David Kross as the footballer Bert Trautmann, will be shown on Sunday at the Spazju Kreattiv cinema, St James Cavalier, Valletta at 5.30pm.

Margaret Friar catches the eye of young German inmate Trautmann while making delivery rounds to a PoW camp near Manchester at the end of World War II. When her father, who manages the local amateur football team, sees him playing in goal in a prison yard kickabout, he is so taken by his prowess between the posts that he gets him out of the camp to play for his side, St Helen’s Town.

Despite local hostility, Margaret’s and Bert’s love blossoms, as does his reputation as an outstanding goalkeeper, eventually catching the eye of Man City. Rather than going back to Germany like nearly all the other camp inmates, Bert signs for the big club and marries his English sweetheart, Margaret. However, his signing causes outrage to thousands of Man City fans, many of whom are Jewish.

Bert’s path to acceptance begins and peaks at the 1956 FA Cup Final when he secures victory for Man City by playing on despite breaking his neck. Yet fate twists the knife for both Margaret and Bert and their love and loyalty to each other is put to the ultimate test.
