A lecture forming part of a programme of events related to the ongoing National Library of Malta exhibition Liber Librorum: Texts, Translations & Exegesis, will be held tomorrow.
The exhibition is on display until June 26.
The lecture, ‘The Bible. Which Bible?’, will be delivered by Prof. Anthony Frendo. Organised by Malta Libraries at the National Library of Malta in Valletta, it will be dealing mainly with the different versions of the Bible, which is a topic the exhibition itself tackles. The idea is to show that when we consider various factors, such as that of the complex composition of the Bible, the various canons that there are and the fact that we do not possess one single autograph of any biblical text, it follows that we ask: “What do we really mean when we say ‘The Bible’?”
Prof. Frendo is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and Professor of Near Eastern Archaeology and the Hebrew Bible at the University of Malta, where he is a member both of the Department of Oriental Studies as well as that of Classics and Archaeology. His main interests are biblical archaeology, classical Hebrew, northwest Semitic inscriptions (especially Phoenician-Punic) and the historiography of ancient Israel. He has had numerous contributions published in international publications.
The lecture, which will take place tomorrow at 6.30pm. It will be followed by a viewing of exhibits from the National Library collection. Admission is free and no booking is required. For queries contact Malta Libraries on events.library@gov.mt.
