The 13th edition of the National Mechanised Ground Fireworks Festival will be held on the Granaries in Floriana, today, starting at 10.30pm, on the eve of the feast of St Publius.

The festival will see eight fire-works factories/organisations competing against each other to see who sets up the best and most original mechanised Catherine wheel ground fire-works displays.

This year’s festival’s participants are St Gabriel’s Band Club Fireworks Association, Balzan, St Peter in Chains Fireworks Commission, Birżebbuġa, Our Lady of the Girdle Fireworks Complex, Gudja, 15th August Fireworks Complex, Mosta, Our Lady of the Lily Fireworks Complex, Mqabba, St Philip Fireworks Complex, Żebbuġ, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Fireworks Complex, Żurrieq and St Catherine Fireworks Complex, Żurrieq.

The festival will close with a pyrotechnic spectacle whereby the previous edition’s winner – the 15th August Fireworks Complex of Mosta – will set off a fireworks display known locally as ‘it-tapit’ (the carpet) that crosses the entire width of the Granaries.

In case of inclement weather the festival will be held tomorrow at 10.30pm.
