Nato warships in incident over Maltese ship

Nato warships almost clashed with Yugoslav vessels in the Adriatic as they prevented a Maltese-registered oil tanker from breaking the UN embargo on Serbia and Montenegro on Sunday, Nato said in a statement yesterday.

A Reuters report said the incident occurred when the Lido II, carrying 45,000 tonnes of fuel oil, reported flooding in the engine room.

The ship’s Russian master said he intended to beach the ship about 50 nautical miles away in Albania but Nato said the vessel was on a course for the waters of rump Yugoslavia when intercepted.

Charter flights to Russia

The National Tourism Organisation intends exploiting existing Aeroflot links between Malta and Russia and Air Malta is to run charter operations to Russia as from June, NTOM chairman Michael Soler said.

Mr Soler last month led an NTOM delegation on a fact-finding mission to Moscow during which a Russian language publicity leaflet about Malta was launched.

The number of Russian tourists to Malta last year rose by 84 per cent, to over 4,700.
