Norman Darmanin Demajo will step down from as Malta Football Association (MFA) president when his term in office ends later this year.

The MFA chief announced his decision during Tuesday's Council Meeting.

“I have always stated that any announcement related to my position would be made in the appropriate fora,” Mr Darmanin Demajo said.

“Today I'd like to announce that I will not be contesting the election of Malta FA president at the next Annual General Meeting.

“I’m stating my position several weeks in advance to dispel any doubts about my intentions.

“I take the opportunity to thank all those who have worked with me over the past nine years."

Mr Darmanin Demajo had been at the helm of the local governing body of football for the past nine years.

He was elected as president of the MFA for the first time in 2010 when he defeated his predecessor Joe Mifsud during an election.

During his term in office, Mr Darmanin Demajo has been instrumental in upgrading the club's infrastructure with the installation of several artificial pitches in various club training grounds while also the construction of a number of football stadiums.

Local football fans will now be keeping a close eye on who his potential success at the helm of the local football governing body will be.

Speculation has been rife during the last few weeks that two former MFA officials are set to launch their bid to succeed Mr Darmanin Demajo.

Bjorn Vassallo, former Malta FA general secretary and CEO, and a close aide to Mr Darmanin Demajo in his electoral campaign in 2010, is expected to be one of the candidates for the post.

Mr Vassallo has vast experience in football administration following his roles at the MFA and during the last two years he has gained also a good standing in international level after filling the role of FIFA Director of Europe.

Chris Bonett is another likely candidate for the post.

Dr Bonett has also formed part of the MFA administration under Mr Darmanin Demajo's presidency and held the position of vice-president and was also the head of the legal department.

Neither Mr Vassallo or Dr Bonett have so far made an official announcement on whether they will contest this year's election.
