A woman who is arguably Qala's most loyal resident turned 103 on Saturday, with friends and family gathering in the Gozitan village to celebrate the event.

Carmena Vella was born in 1916 and has spent her entire life in the southwestern Gozitan village.

She had nine children throughout her life - seven daughters and two sons. Eight of them gathered around the dinner table on Saturday morning to cheer as she blew out her birthday candles for the 103rd time.

They were joined by friends, neighbours and community well-wishers who clapped and sang happy birthday to Mrs Vella.

The 103-year-old attributes her longevity to her trust in God, support from her family, being happy with what she has and one other ingredient - minding her own business.
