A new short film mulls the future of Europe through the eyes of the most vulnerable of its descendants.
The film, from director Frédéric Planchon, conceived as part of the Choose your Future campaign, reminds audiences of the shared values of the foundation to the European project and how safeguarding it is not just a matter of temporal commodity, but an essential element in maintaining a stable future.
The promo film is part of a promotional campaign by the European Parliament ahead of the May European elections.
Shot over 12 days in February and March, it features births from four European countries, Greece, Hungary, Denmark and Czechia, representing the north, central and south regions of Europe.
The film is for and about Europeans, starring 15 European women and their families as they prepare to welcome newborns into the world.
The film shows the most intimate and tender moments of life can serve as a reminder as to who exactly the future is for, and witnessing the birth of several new Europeans is a captivating moment of beauty.
Planchon’s film serves to be a sentimental exploration of who most suffers the consequences of our decisions, particularly if those decisions impact several facets in the lives of young citizens in the long term.
The hope and joy that meets the start of new lives puts into perspective the community that unites around mothers and their children to nurture, love and protect them - placing the responsibility of the future not just on the few, but on the many.
