‘Security is in as poort state as discipline’ – Judge Caruana Curran report on prisons

There is “an urgent need for improvement in all aspects of prison management and the prison regime at Corradino”, a report on the civil prisons has concluded.

The report by Judge Maurice Caruana Curran was laid on the Table of the House on Thursday by Home Affairs Minister Louis Galea during the discussion of a ‘no confidence’ motion in him which was not approved.

The report, presented to the minister in June, found the prison urgently needed refurbishing and discipline, and security needed immediate attention. Prisoner education had to be extended and facilities updated.

In his report, the judge made a number of suggestions on how Corradino could become a “good prison in the modern sense”. He said the prison, built in 1857, did not have an unpleasant atmosphere but “that is not to say it is not facing serious problems”.

A draft on new prison regulations suggested by the judge was also put on the Table of the House.

Maltese surgeon carries out hair transplant in Australia

Maltese surgeon Thomas Pirotta, of Melbourne, Australia, has successfully carried out a hair transplant on his brother, Charlie Pirotta, according to Peter Game, writing in yesterday’s Daily Express from Melbourne.

Charlie Pirotta started losing his hair at 25 and baldness made him feel miserable. Today, said Peter Game, Charlie is “as joyous as the weakling who grew muscles”. Dr Pirotta carried out the grafting because he was worried by the pschological effect that baldness was having on his brother’s normally happy disposition.
