In the story of the creation, God insists upon showing His pleasure at everything He had just created. Indeed, after creating the heavens, the seas, the vegetation and all kinds of animals, God saw “that it was good”. However, this was not enough and He went further. “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them. And God blessed them and said to them: ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.’”

It is only in the creation of man and woman that God said that “it was very good”, thus emphasising the difference between other living creatures and those made “in His own image”.

However, the “envy of the devil” proved too much and the latter tempted and was successful in making man fall into sin, shattering the primordial innocence he had been endowed with by God. Consequently, sin flooded the world and the harmony that existed between man and nature and between man and man was destroyed. Passions and instincts prevailed, leading to all manner of sinful actions that have accompanied mankind throughout history.

This is most evident today in sexual morality and, especially, gender ideology, which is in open defiance to God as creator who made us “male and female”. We even go so far as to call ‘love’ what scripture has condemned in no uncertain terms. Love that is removed from God and His divine, eternal laws can never be called such and that includes both that in heterosexual relationships outside sacramental marriage and that in homosexual acts.

No authority on earth can ever change this. After man’s fall God could have washed His hands of us and let us sink in the aftermath of our sinful actions. But He did the unfathomable. He became man, suffered and died to redeem us from our sins. Only in recognising ourselves as sinners in need of redemption and striving to live according to His will can we hope to achieve that eternal happiness that Christ promised to those who love Him.
