ĦAMRUN SPARTANS   2

Tulimieri 34

Domoraud 76

Ħamrun Spartans remained on course for European football next season when they battled past rivals Pieta Hotspurs 2-0 to strengthen their grip on fourth spot.

The result also condemned the Hotspurs to Division One football next season.

Wilfried Domoraud should have put Ħamrun ahead inside the first 15 seconds when he was put clear by the returning Triston Caruana but incredibly fired wide in front of Pietà goalkeeper Jacob Chircop St John.

On seven minutes Domoraud’s pull back picked Marco Criaco who fired wide.

The Hotspurs threatened on 16 minutes when Christian Grech flicked the ball towards goal following a Dylan Agius corner kick but goalkeeper Manuel Bartolo did well to avert the danger.

Ħamrun were forced to make a first change on 25 minutes as Criaco limped out injured and was replaced by Conor Borg.

The Reds continued to boss the proceedings and on 32 minutes they missed another sitter when Henneberg played in Tulimieri who fired wide with only the Hotspurs custodian to beat.

But the Italian striker made amends two minutes later when in another quick raid Henneberg turned past Chircop St John before teeing up Tulimieri to fire home.

On the restart, Ħamrun threatened again as inside the first minute, Domoraud picked Henneberg who headed wide.

The Hotspurs responded with a Dylan Agius shot that Bartolo tipped over while minutes later Jan Busuttil hit a firm drive that hit the sidenetting.

Ramon Zammit’s men tried to keep their ante as they needed to turn the match around to keep their hopes of salvation alive.

The Reds should have had a penalty on 70 minutes when Scicluna looked to have been upended by Christian Grech inside the area but referee Mario Apap waved play on.

Still, the Spartans sealed their win on 76 minutes when Karl Micallef picked Domoraud inside the area and the Frenchman slid the ball past Chircop St John.

In stoppage time Gabriel Mensah was unlucky not to pull a goal back when his volley came off against the bar.

Wilfried Domoraud was voted as the BOV Player of the Match.
